Square Application Configuration Issue

Your Square app doesn't have Subscriptions capability enabled

Confirmed Issue

❌ No subscription plans created in Square Item Library

This confirms that Square is NOT granting the ITEMS_WRITE permission, even though we're requesting it in the OAuth URL.

What's Happening:

  • OAuth URL requests 11 scopes (including ITEMS_WRITE, SUBSCRIPTIONS_WRITE, etc.) ✅
  • But Square authorization page only shows 5 basic scopes ⚠️
  • Square only grants: MERCHANT_PROFILE, CUSTOMERS, PAYMENTS ✅
  • Square ignores: ITEMS, SUBSCRIPTIONS, ORDERS, INVOICES ❌
Solution 1: Create a NEW Square Application (Recommended)

Your current Square app was likely created before Subscriptions API was available, or doesn't have this capability enabled. Creating a fresh app usually fixes this.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1

Go to Square Developer Dashboard

https://developer.squareup.com/apps
2

Create New Application

Click "+ Create App" or the "+" button

3

Select Application Capabilities

Square will ask "What will you build first?" - Select these options:

Accept payments

Required for processing subscription payments

Manage a product catalog

CRITICAL - This is where subscription plans are stored!

Build customer relationships

Required for managing customers

⚠️ Important: "Manage a product catalog" is the key! This gives you ITEMS_WRITE permission which is required to create subscription plans.

4

Choose Application Type

Select

Web
as the application type (if asked)

(NOT Mobile, NOT Other - must be Web)

5

Name Your Application

Example: "TricklAI Master Subscriptions"

6

Configure OAuth Redirect URL

Go to: OAuth → Redirect URLs → + Add URL

https://tricklsoft.com/SquareCallback
7

Get New App Credentials

Copy the new Application ID and Application Secret

8

Update TricklAI Environment Variables

In your Base44 project settings, update:

SQUARE_APP_ID=[new app id]

SQUARE_APP_SECRET=[new app secret]

9

Test Connection

Go back to Subscription Engine and try connecting again

✅ Why this usually works: New Square apps created today automatically have access to all current API capabilities, including Subscriptions.

Solution 2: Contact Square Support (If Creating New App Doesn't Work)

If creating a new app doesn't solve the issue, you'll need to contact Square Support:

Email: developers@squareup.com

Subject: "Enable Subscriptions API capability for my application"

Message Template:

Hi Square Team,

I'm building a subscription management platform and need access to the Subscriptions API for my application.

Application ID: [your SQUARE_APP_ID]

When I request OAuth scopes (ITEMS_WRITE, SUBSCRIPTIONS_WRITE, ORDERS_WRITE, INVOICES_WRITE), they are not appearing in the authorization dialog and are not being granted.

Can you please enable Subscriptions capability for this application?

Thank you!

Verify OAuth URL (For Reference)

The OAuth URL we're sending is correct and includes all required scopes. The issue is with the Square Application configuration, not our code.
